Dear walkers,Friday, 3rd July - Don't forget about the chance to stroll round the Patriarch’s Ponds area, visiting houses built by the architect Shekhtel, including the Gorky House. Starting from outside the Starlight Diner, Aquarium Gardens (16 Bol. Sadovaya Ulitsa), near Mayakovskaya Metro at 11am and ending near Tverskaya Metro before 1pm. About 3km, slow.
Monday, 6th July - "Moscow for Beginners" - a PAYING tour (100 roubles per person) down Tverskaya, past (and possibly into) the Kremlin and across the river (great views). This simple route goes across town and takes in most of the major sights. Since Obama's visit starts on the same day, I have no idea whether we will actually be able to enter red square/ alexandrovsky gardens etc... If we can, we will go in to see the kremlin cathedrals (will cost 350 roubles) and gardens. Starts 11am in front of the statue of Pushkin outside Pushkinskaya/Tverskaya/Chekhovskaya metros (purple/green/grey lines). Ends around 3pm near Tretyakovskaya Metro (orange and yellow lines) about 5km, medium-slow. Several stops including lunch somewhere..
Wednesday, 8th July - "A corner of Paradise" - The country estate of the poet Alexander Blok, 65km north of MOscow. Tricky to get to, but worth it. Meet outside Voikovskaya Metro (green line) at 9.30am (exit by back of train; then turn right in the underpass and left up the steps. You should come up near a small market). We will catch the 440 bus (100 roubles) which should connect us with another bus to a nearby village. Walk to Blok's house and back along country roads; visit house (100 roubles) and back again by buses and/or trains (100+ roubles). Arriving back in Moscow some time in the evening - not exactly sure when- still partly exploratory. 7km+, medium-fast.
Monday, 13th - "Trains, planes and psychadelic tower blocks"... Another out of town trip to the town of Zhukovsky, famous for its Air Show and runway. Also in the area: a childrens' railway (NOT operating on the day we are there), a lovely pond to swim in and some interesting buildings. Bring a sandwich and swimming costume. We will meet in the centre of the platform at Vykhino Metro (south end of purple line) at 10am in time to ccatch the 10.20am train to Otdykh ("relaxation"!); walk about 6km through town and park and then picnic by the lake. After this, you have the option of catching a train back to MOscow or going on to the town of Ramenskoe where we can explore the churches, parks and muti-coloured tower blocks. Arriving back in Moscow (Kazansky Vokzal, near Komsomolskaya Metro) by "Sputnik" at about 5pm if not earlier.
Probably one more walk before the holidays - on Weds 15th... details to follow.
Those people who are here all summer might like to join Jantje Zantema, who leads walks every tuesday in the summer months. Simply email her at firstname.lastname@example.org
My walks will start again at the end of August. Don't forget to book ahead for September if you want private tours for yourselves or your visitors. If there are walks you were sorry to miss and you would like them rescheduled at a more convenient time, you can always commission them for an individual or group tour at 500 roubles/hour.
Thank you for all the excellent company over the last few weeks. Some photos are attached. Phoebe
